چکیده

This paper describes three new results for volume rendering algorithms utilizing splatting. First, an antialiasing extension to the basic splatting algorithm is introduced that mitigates the spatial aliasing for high-resolution volumes. Aliasing can be severe for high-resolution volumes or volumes where a high depth of field leads to converging samples along the perspective axis. Next, an analysis of the common approximation errors in the splatting process for perspective viewing is presented. In this context, we give different implementations, distinguished by efficiency and accuracy, for adding the splat contributions to the image plane. We then present new results in controlling the splatting errors and also show their behavior in the framework of our new antialiasing technique. Finally, current work in progress on extensions to splatting for temporal antialiasing is demonstrated. Here, we present a simple but highly effective scheme for adding motion blur to fast moving volumes.

View-Independent Object-Space Surface Splatting

Elliptical weighted average (EWA) surface splatting is an important technique for producing high-quality point-based rendering. With the proliferation of programmable graphics hardware, many methods have been proposed recently to implement hardware-accelerated EWA surface splatting on modern consumerlevel graphics hardware. However, we notice that those methods tend to rely heavily on customize...

Splatting J . Edward Swan II , Klaus Mueller , Torsten Möller , Naeem Shareef , Roger Crawfis , and Roni Yagel

Splatting is a popular direct volume rendering algorithm that was originally conceived and implemented to render orthographic projections. This paper describes an anti-aliasing extension to the basic splatting algorithm, as well as an error analysis, that make it practical to use for perspective projections. To date, splatting has not correctly rendered cases where the volume sampling rate is h...

Methodology for design of antialiasing filters for autostereoscopic displays

Multi-view autostereoscopic displays can be considered as a kind of a multirate system due to the construction compromise between the number of different views and spatial resolution adopted for such displays. Images to be visualized on these displays are prone to aliasing errors. Careful antialiasing requires knowledge about the display frequency response, which is determined mainly by the vie...

Approximate Program Smoothing Using Mean-Variance Statistics, with Application to Procedural Shader Bandlimiting

Fig. 1. Our paper gives a novel compiler framework for smoothing out programs in an approximate manner. Here we show how our smoothing framework can be applied to bandlimiting (antialiasing) procedural shader programs. In (a) is the ground truth result for a brick shader, estimated by using 1000 samples; (b) is the aliased result due to naively evaluating the original shader program; (c) is our...

Antialiasing with Line Samples

Antialiasing is a necessary component of any high quality renderer. An antialiased image is produced by convolving the scene with an antialiasing filter and sampling the result, or equivalently by solving the antialiasing integral at each pixel. Though methods for analytically computing this integral exist, they require the continuous two-dimensional result of visible-surface computations. Beca...
